Shirley Ann Smart, born August 5, 1936, in Clintonville, Wisconsin, peacefully passed away on June 4, 2026, at the age of 89. She leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and adventure that will forever resonate in the hearts of her family and friends.
Shirley is survived by her sons, Michael (Doreen) Smart, Scott (Holi) Smart, and Kenneth Smart; her grandchildren, Kelly (Brennen), Nathaniel (Georgina), Nicholas (Melissa), Christopher (Alexandra), Melissa, William, Michelle (Ely), and Erica (Kirk); her great-grandchildren, Isabella, Jayden, Blaire, Wylder, Tyler (Madison), Briana, Hudson, Violet, Raelynn, Quinn, and Grace; and her great-great-grandson, Dawson. Shirley is further survived by Laura Smart and her special friends, Nancy Arnold and Jacquie Penshore, who were like sisters to her. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Hugo and Viola Schauder; her loving husband, Jim Smart; her son, David Smart; and her great-granddaughter, Gabriella.
Shirley was known for her unyielding spirit and commitment to making the world a better place. As a dedicated YMCA lifeguard, she left a lasting impact on her community, teaching countless children the joys of swimming, water sports, and safety. Her passion for the outdoors was evident in her love of sailing, snowmobiling, and especially canoeing. Shirley had a deep appreciation for Wilderness Inquiry, an organization dedicated to connecting people of all ages, backgrounds, identities, and abilities through shared outdoor adventures so all people may experience the benefits of time spent in nature. Whether cross-country skiing, biking, or walking along the shores of her beloved lakes, the wilderness was her second home.
In her early years, Shirley embraced her creativity by sewing custom swimsuits for those in need through her home business, "Custom Sewn Swimsuits by Smart," a reflection of her generous heart and entrepreneurial spirit. She took pride in designing her own wedding gown and bridesmaid dresses, drawing upon the creativity and craftsmanship instilled by her parents, who owned the only shoe store in the town of Clintonville, Wisconsin. Her many interests ranged from archery and playing bridge to riding her motorcycle and enjoying outdoor adventures. Her famous homemade caramels were a cherished treat among family and friends.
Shirley was not only a devoted mother to her sons, but also the beloved "Ma" of the neighborhood. She created a welcoming home filled with laughter, warmth, and love. As a grandmother, she cherished every moment with her family, sharing her kindness, wisdom, and adventurous spirit across generations.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Oak Park Place and Jen with St. Croix Hospice for their unwavering support and compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Shirley’s name may be made to the YMCA, Wilderness Inquiry, or St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
