Richard "Rick" Thompson

March 5, 1953 — August 4, 2025

Richard "Rick" Thompson

Richard “Rick” Thompson, age 72, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his daughters, on August 4, 2025, at Angels Grace Hospice. Rick was born in Watertown, WI, on March 5, 1953, to Samuel and Georgene Thompson. He enjoyed an active childhood in Oconomowoc, WI, with his brothers, sisters, and many childhood friends. Rick was always known for his smile and lively personality.

Rick is survived by his wife, Debra, and daughters, Samantha (Tobie) Gravelle and Ericka (Larry) Steltz. He is also survived by his siblings: Dan (CeCe) Thompson, Judy Moede, Sue (Art) Worner, Jim (Bobbie Jo) Thompson, and Joan (Will) Cochrane; along with many nieces, nephews, and special friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Georgene; his father- and mother-in-law, Fred and Ericka Vogt; and his brothers-in-law, Jack Froh, Jerry Moede, Tom Vogt, and Fred Vogt Jr.

Rick married his wife, Deb, on October 3, 1974, and excelled in his career as a Tool and Die Maker. He enjoyed an active lifestyle, including volleyball, long bicycle trips, cross-country skiing, and running with the Hash House Harriers.

In early 1995, Rick was in a serious car accident that left him a T3 paraplegic. He never let his accident slow him down or dampen his spirit. He had an inspirational outlook on life and was blessed with unwavering support from his family and friends. He returned to school, earned an associate degree in mechanical design, and went back to work. He worked at several firms before finding his home and finishing his career in 2019 at Sentry Equipment in Oconomowoc.

After his injury, Rick continued his active lifestyle, including riding bicycles, listening to music, watching live bands, cheering for the Packers and Badgers, playing wheelchair basketball, and participating in many other wheelchair-based sports and activities. Rick was a volunteer mentor for the Milwaukee Chapter of the National Spinal Cord Injury Association, as well as a longtime Okauchee Lions Club member. He was honored by the club with the Marvin Jones Fellowship Award.

No matter what he was doing, he always enjoyed spending time with his friends and family. Rick traveled to many places during his life. A few special trips included a family vacation to Hawaii, a Caribbean cruise with friends, and a family trip to Jamaica for his and Deb’s 40th wedding anniversary.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Marquardt Manor, Watertown Memorial Hospital ICU, and Angels Grace Hospice for their care, compassion, and support during this difficult time.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Okauchee Lions Club, the National Spinal Cord Injury Association Milwaukee Chapter, the Lake Area Free Clinic, Angels Grace Hospice, or a local charity of your choice in Rick’s name are welcome.

Visitation will take place on Friday, October 17, from 1–3 p.m. at St. Catherine’s (W359 N8512 Brown Street, Oconomowoc, WI 53066), with a service to follow. Burial will take place on Saturday, October 18, at 2 p.m. at Lac La Belle Cemetery.
