A Life Filled with ‘a Lotte’ Sunshine

Lieselotte “Liese” Muth, 94, peacefully joined the Lord and her beloved husband, Charles, on Aug. 9, 2026.

She was born on July 28, 1932, the second of three children to German immigrants William and Anna Brandt. Her loving parents instilled in her a life of servanthood for family, faith and anyone who needed her help.

Liese married Charles Muth on Feb. 12, 1955, starting their loving 50-year journey in Hawaii, where he was stationed as the member of the U.S. Army. After moving back to Milwaukee, they raised their family of six children with remarkable patience and spirit, providing the perfect blend of discipline and support to help them chase their dreams and overcome their obstacles. Liese ran a tight but fun ship, demanding that chores be completed but with rewards that included trips to Moose Lake and time in the backyard swimming pool.

Liese was a believer in education and lover of the arts. Following her graduation from Milwaukee Custer High School, she was adamant about continuing her studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. There, she earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry, a source of pride she shared as an example and inspiration to her children and others.

Liese served as an after-school tutor to her children, as Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader and as a substitute teacher at St. Catherine of Alexandria elementary school. As a student, she enrolled in painting classes, subsequently painting framed canvases of nature scenes, which she and her children affectionally called “Mona Lieses.”

While Liese never played a musical instrument or sang in a band or choir, she adored those who did, tolerating the basement jam sessions of her children, attending grandchildren’s concerts and singing with her Shorehaven caregivers and neighbors. “You Are My Sunshine” became her favorite, bringing her joy and calm.

Liese’s influence never ended, even as she progressed with Alzheimer’s disease, displaying her trademark fortitude, faith and soft smile. She showed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren that it was OK to be vulnerable and made sure they felt her love and gratitude at every visit – and they did.

Liese is preceded in death by her husband Charles, parents and two brothers, Herman (Joan) Brandt and William (Nina) Brandt. She is survived by six children, Patrick (Darthea Powden) Muth, Deborah (Joseph Monaco) Spurr, Lynne (Glenn Cunkle) Muth, Kenneth (Pamela) Muth, James (Jane) Muth and Thomas Muth. She is further survived by grandchildren, Eric, Sarah, Erin, Sean, Andrew, Selena, Kelsey, Monica, Cameron, Jessica, Daniel and Annaliese; and great-grandchildren, Calvin, Liam, Riley, Rae, Noah, Paige, Jace, Maddie and John Paul. 

A visitation for Liese will be held on Friday, Aug. 28, 2026 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., immediately followed by a memorial service, at the Chapel of the Chimes, Wisconsin Memorial Park, 13235 W Capitol Dr., Brookfield, Wisconsin. Burial services will follow at the Wisconsin Memorial Park cemetery.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful staff and volunteers at Shorehaven in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. You were not only her trusted caregivers, but also her treasured friends. Also, thanks to Agrace Hospice Care for your guidance and ensuring a peaceful end to her journey. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to those two organizations.
