John Ivan Wickenberg

John Ivan Wickenberg, age 82, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on July 12, 2026. John was born in Coleman, WI on July 9,1944 to Gus and Sylvia Wickenberg.

John is survived by his wife Kaye, along with his brothers Ralph and Garon, as well as nieces and nephews.

John and Kaye began their story while studying at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. They enjoyed summer travels around the world, day long bike rides through country roads and quiet moments with their beloved dogs and cats.

John’s passion for art began as a child with his love for nature. He received his MFA degree in 1969 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with John Wilde as his major professor. He was a professor of art at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater where he significantly impacted the art program and mentoring students in various artistic disciplines. Primarily known for watercolor and gouache paintings, his works often featured minimalist still life’s and landscapes, reflecting his sense of awe and respect for our fragile world. John’s drawings and paintings were featured regionally and nationally since 1967. He received recognition as an award-winner in the 2005 Forward Survey of Wisconsin Art NOW.
