Gary Daniel Schlender

Gary Daniel Schlender, age 63, entered into eternal rest on Friday, July 17, 2026, in Longmont, Colorado, surrounded by loved ones.

Born on February 10, 1963, in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin to Jan and Dan Schlender, Gary grew up on Golden Lake in Summit, Wisconsin. From an early age, he displayed an exceptional curiosity and aptitude for science and engineering. While in high school, he won a Science Fair competition that earned him a full scholarship to Marquette University.

Before graduating from Marquette, Gary began an internship with HK Systems (now Dematic), where he was hired full-time as an Engineering/Project Administrator. He later transitioned into the role of Project Manager and remained with the company for 15 years, where he met the love of his life, Vicki. Gary eventually founded SCS Consulting Services, where he specialized in project management for the newspaper industry. Throughout his career, he managed projects for some of the nation's most respected publications, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Boston Globe.

Gary married Vicki on August 7, 1993, and together they built a beautiful life on Okauchee Lake, where they spent the next 32 years raising their family. Along with their daughter, Leia, and stepson, Paul, they created countless memories, spending summers boating and water skiing and winters skating and ice fishing.

Gary had many interests and could often be found tinkering with cars, electronics, or whatever project was currently on his mind. He earned his Sport Pilot license through the EAA, loved riding his Harley, and was a devoted Star Trek fan. Gary’s dream was to become an astronaut. This passion sparked a lifelong fascination with astronomy and space exploration.

Known for his brilliant intellect and practical wisdom, Gary possessed a rare gift for solving complex problems that baffled most others. More than his sharp mind, it was his heart that defined him. He was endlessly generous with his time, always ready to drop everything to help. Whether someone needed a broken machine fixed, sound advice, or just a listening ear, Gary was the unwavering 'go-to' person for his family and friends.

Gary retired in January 2026, and in true “Gary” style, pivoted from the lake to the mountains to begin yet another adventure. In Lyons, Colorado, he began transforming an off-grid mountain home into the perfect retreat—a project that reflected both his creativity and love of building something meaningful.

Gary is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Vicki Schlender; daughter, Leia Schlender; stepson, Paul Hill (Becca); brother, Daryl Schlender (Pam) sister, Karen Trepton (Dave); brother, Kyle Schlender (Cindy); uncle, Bob Butschke (Cathy); father-in law, Bill; brother-in-law, Mike; brother-in-law, David, as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who were like family.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Jan and Dan Schlender; mother-in-law, Barb Kalwitz; and sister-in-law, Steffi Kalwitz.

Gary's legacy of kindness, ingenuity, generosity, and unwavering love for his family will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Funeral services will be held on August 22, 2026 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Okauchee, Wisconsin. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. till noon, followed by a funeral service at noon.
