It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Donald Roger Schmitt, fondly known as "Don" or "Donnie," on June 20, 2026, at the age of 91. A beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, and community member, Don lived a life marked by kindness, hard work, friendship, and devotion to family.

Don was born on December 12, 1934, in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, where he was raised in the warmth of a close-knit community. After proudly serving in the United States Navy for two years, he returned to his hometown and dedicated himself to his craft as a barber. For nearly half a century, Don owned and operated Schmitt's Barbershop in Oconomowoc, where his gentle hands, skilled craftsmanship, and friendly conversation touched the lives of countless customers. More than just a place for a haircut, the shop became a gathering place where friendships were formed and stories were shared. Many families entrusted Don with their haircuts across multiple generations, and he took great pride in the lasting relationships he built with those who sat in his chair.

Don is survived by his beloved son, Brian Schmitt, and daughter-in-law, Christy Schmitt. He leaves a legacy of love through his grandchildren, Kyle (Alex) Schmitt and Erin Schmitt, and his great-grandchildren, Peyton Schmitt and Dean Schmitt.

He was preceded in death by his devoted wife, MaryAnn Schmitt; his daughter, Lisa Schmitt; his parents, Matthew and Dorothy Schmitt; and his brother, Raymond Schmitt.

A man of many passions, Don enjoyed fishing and golfing and found great peace in both pursuits. His outgoing personality and genuine interest in others drew friends wherever he went. He treasured the many friendships he built throughout his life, including his dear friend, Mac Dorn.

Don was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Oconomowoc, where he found strength in his faith and joy in the fellowship of his church family.

Don also possessed an adventurous spirit and a love of travel. Alongside his longtime friends Jerry Koch and his wife, Leanne, he explored the world, creating unforgettable memories in destinations including Germany, Australia and Africa.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Shorehaven for the compassionate care, kindness, and support they provided to Don and his family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

A memorial service will be held on July 6, 2026, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 210 E. Pleasant Street, Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, 53066. Visitation will take place from 9:00am to 11:00am, with the service to follow.
