In Memory of David Smith
Dave Smith, a long-time resident of Oconomowoc, WI, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2026, leaving behind cherished friends and family. His legacy is defined by his integrity and his dedication to serving others including his family, the Oconomowoc baseball community, and his Trek Bicycle family.
Dave grew up in South Bend, Indiana, where his parents and three brothers were devoted to religion and sports. He met his wife of 44 years Karen at St. Joseph High School in South Bend. Dave was a standout athlete in baseball and in football where he helped lead St. Joseph High School to a State Championship as their star quarterback. He moved to the Milwaukee area in his early twenties before calling Oconomowoc his home.
Dave was an ardent supporter of youth baseball in Oconomowoc for many decades. At Trek, he built strong relationships with customers and colleagues alike. For 37 years, he poured his dedication, creativity, and exceptional attention to detail into his work, helping Trek grow from a small startup into one of the largest bicycle companies in the world. He carried a deep pride in both his contributions to Trek and his commitment to baseball.
Baseball, though, was where Dave’s heart truly belonged. As a coach, he taught kids not only how to play the game but also the life skills of patience, sportsmanship, and resilience in the face of challenges. Later, as president and long-standing Board Member of the Oconomowoc Baseball program, Dave championed youth sports with the same dedication he gave to his own family, leaving an indelible mark on countless young athletes and their families. Dave also brought his decades of experience and perspective to his son Sean’s STiKS Training Academy, which carries on his lifelong dedication to youth baseball.
In the fifteen years that followed his marriage to Judy in 2011, her children Karen, Becky, Sarah, and Tony came to love and appreciate him as an important guiding presence in their lives. Dave was a devoted family man — kind, loving, endlessly patient, and incredibly wise. He was a wonderful father, deeply committed to supporting his children and grandchildren. He was also a loving husband, blessed to share his life with two remarkable women, Karen and Judy.
David is survived by his beloved wife, Judy Smith and her children; his brother, Robert Smith; and his children and ten grandchildren: Kevin and his children Melyssa, Meagan, and Madison; Stephen (Traci) and their children Riley and Benjamin, Sean and his children Sawyer, Tatum and Kenadie; and Brian (Tanya) and their children Graham and Aubree.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jane and Fred Smith; his first wife, Karen Smith; his sister-in-law Colette Smith and his brothers, Richard Smith and Phillip Smith.
A celebration of David’s life will be held on Friday, June 5th. Visitation from 9–11am, service at 11am with luncheon to follow at Zion Episcopal Church in Oconomowoc. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Oconomowoc Area Baseball Club (OABC) in support of youth sports — a cause that meant the world to him.
